Study- "Sex in Media Bad Influence on Teens"

.
April 5, 2006  Study- "..The media will continue to serve as a kind of sexual super peer that doesn't have the best interests of young people in mind," said Jane Brown, a prof. at U. of North Carolina and the principal investigator of the study that analyzed 308 different television shows, movies, songs, & magazines commonly used by teenagers & calculated each teens “sexual influence.” The researchers then followed up with each teen two years later inquiring about their sexual behavior. "Unfortunately, the media aren't the best sex educators.. tending to leave out the crucial three C's: commitment, contraception and consequences,"  Brown said.

.."Media Exposure a "Major Public Health Issue" For Children, Teens"
.
April 6, 2006  It's a "major public health issue," Archives editors Dimitri A. Christakis, MD, MPH, and Frederick J. Zimmerman, PhD, University of Washington, Seattle, say in a news release. They note that electronic media "are among the most profound influences on children in this country" and that "this intersects with many other issues that are critically important to child health, including violence, obesity, tobacco/alcohol use, and risky sexual behaviors."
.
A series of 15 new studies found that the "media harm" begins early in the preschool years and continues through adolescence from TV, movies, video games, and Internet use having serious consequences for children's health.
.
In children and teens, aggressive and violent behavior, obesity, social isolation, sexual initiation, are linked to exposure to media images with a broad range of negative health, behavior and lifestyle issues.

Panel: "Iraq's "Complete Story" Not Being Told by Media"
.
April 6, 2006  A panel discussion organized by Reuters agreed that U.S. media coverage of Iraq is too polarized between "good news" and "bad news" and all sides are missing out on the complete picture.
.
That was one of the few points of agreement between journalists, a professional blogger and a U.S. military spokesman gathered in New York to discuss media in Iraq.
.
Lt. Col. Steven Boylan, who returned to the United States in December after 16 months in Iraq as chief spokesman for the U.S. military, said he found there was less coverage of Iraq in the U.S. media on his return than he expected. "It's that the complete story is not being told," he said.
.
"Not A Patriotic War Effort"
.
The anti-war, negative reporting by the U. S. media is seen by many to be putting our troops in harm's way, rather than helping the effort to succeed.
.
Bush administration officials have increasingly criticized the media for focusing too much on Iraq's daily violence and ethnic strife rather than on what they say are positive stories, such as freedoms resulting from democratic elections heretofore not available; non-fear of rampant govt. executions; building infrastructure; increasingly better living conditions; women's rights in progress; available education; and relative stability in many parts of the country; etc.

4/9/06  Study -"Unprecedented Doubling of Type 2 Diabetes Drug Use For U. S. Kids"
HealthDay News - Finding an increase from 0.3 to 0.6 per 1,000, the 4 yr. Study analyzed prescription records of nearly 4M U.S. kids, for the number of children & teens taking prescription drugs to treat or prevent type 2 diabetes: "From 2002 to 2005, we found a doubling of type 2 diabetes medications...we've never seen a doubling of prescriptions over this period of time," said Emily Cox, the sr. dir. of research at Express Scripts, that conducted the study.  She believes it lends credence to what doctors and other health care professionals have long suspected: that as Amer. kids "become heavier, their risk for type 2 diabetes is rising."
